Jets Report

03/01/15

The Winnipeg Jets are doing their very best to hold on to one of the 2 Wild Card spots in an extremely tough Western Conference playoff race. The Jets played St Louis very tough the other night in what looked like a playoff game, before settling for a shootout loss. The good news for the Jets is that GM Chevy is arming head coach Paul Maurice with the nhl vets instead of AHL call-ups as the injuries continue to pile up.

Since losing prize off season acquisition (seriously) Mathieu Perrault, Chevy has added two capable wingers in Drew Stafford and Jiri Tlusty, as well as a former Calder Trophy winner in the 6’8 Tyler Myers. Nobody in the Jets room can say Chevy isn’t doing his part. The time is now to make the playoffs in Winnipeg and the players know it.

Hot Topics:

1. Playoff Race
Every point the Jets can muster up is a huge one, as the Flames and Sharks are 4 and 6 points behind them respectively. The good news is that the Sharks are going out of their way to lose games these days and appear to have internal issues that continue to plague that team. The Flames have just put Captain Mark Giordano on IR which does not bode well for them. He is the heart and soul of that team and they will surely miss him. Coach Bob Hartley seemingly finds ways to win this team though, so we shouldn’t count them out by any means. No team works harder or has as many 3rd period come from behind wins as the Flames do.

2. Deadline
Is Chevy done? It would be hard to be mad at him if he was, but multiple sources say he is still looking for a forward. Having made the huge deal with Buffalo getting help for the now (Myers, Stafford) and the future ( 1st rounder, Lemieux and Armia) he still has plenty of prospects and picks at his disposal should he choose to add to his group. The Jets were in on Daniel Winnik and on Curtis Glencross, two left handed forwards who can play in the top 9, so it would appear that that’s what he’s after. With over 7 million in cap room, don’t be shocked if Chevy makes a deal for someone with term left on their contract, just don’t be shocked if makes no deal at all.

3. Goaltending
A common source of frustration for Jets fans over the years and this year is no different. The people say go with Hutch, the stats say to go with Hutch, yet Pavelec still receives more time in the crease than we would all like to see. With the playoff race going down to the wire it will be interesting to see how this plays out and if Maurice will ever officially relegate Pavelec to #2. Here’s hoping.

We will have a recap of the Kings game and trade deadline news and notes coming shortly.
